After nearly two decades of service, Roy Hayes has passed the helm to Peter Wells. Peter started working as a Captain in 1974 for Jerry Grant after graduating from Maine Maritime Academy. THE NEW OPERATOR IS CHAPPAQUIDDICK FERRY, INC. The Winter Schedule is in effect from approximately October 16th through May 14th. Then again from 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM and finally from 11:00 PM to 11:15 PM The Summer Schedule is in effect from May 15th through approximately October 15th. Early trips: You may schedule an early trip at 6:00 AM or 6:15 AM by speaking directly with the ferry captain before 6:00 PM on the afternoon before the morning of your early trip. There is an additional fee of $20 for these early trips. Notice to home owners: Fee for after hours ferry service for police response to automatic burglar and fire alarm activations, regardless if actual or false alarms. $150. Fire, Police and Medical emergencies on Chappaquiddick: CALL 911 OR FROM A CELL PHONE CALL 508-693-1212. There is an emergency phone on the front of the Chappaquiddick Fire House. The personnel at the communications center will call or page the necessary police, fire and ferry personel to handle emergencies on Chappaquiddick, during the operating hours as well as after hours when the ferry is shut down. Missing the last ferry run because you stayed at a party too late does not qualify as an emergency. Don't bother the hardworking and dedicated people at the communications center with this type of problem. Plan ahead, keep track of the time and don't wait until the last minute to rush to the ferry. THE CHAPPY FERRYThe Ferry is now operating on the summer schedule. The Ferry runs continuously from 6:45 am to midnight. The Chappaquiddick Ferry is open for business 365 days a year. See the above section for variations between the Summer and Winter schedules. The ferry carries vehicles and passengers between Chappaquiddick Island and Dock Street in Edgartown. Chappaquiddick is apparently Indian for “sometimes an island.” Chappaquiddick is currently an actual island since the barrier beach at the south end of Katama Bay was breached by a storm in the Spring of 2007. The straight line distance between the landings is 527 feet. Without any wind or current the crossing takes only 1 minute. Since the breach there is nearly always a current. There are also back eddies and rips in the area of the ferry crossing. Because of the breach, the direction of the tidal flow has reversed. Now a rising tide flows northward in through Katama Bay and a falling tide flows southward. The time of high and low tides at the ferry still agree with the Edgartown times posted in the tidal charts. However, the change in direction of the current flow agrees more closely with the times posted for ebb and flood at Wasque Point. We have observed the water level continuing to rise even after the current has changed direction. A second breach closer to Wasque formed during March 2008 and the barrier beach between the two openings has been rapidly eroding since. Because of the strong currents the crossing may take several minutes and cover thousands of feet traveled through the water. |
