Volunteering Opportunities

The Friends of Vineyard Soccer, Inc (FOVS) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization entirely run by volunteers.  Volunteering can be a very rewarding experience for people who have an interest, are available and are motivated to invest in the young people of our community.  Come join the most popular youth sports organizations on Martha's Vineyard - be a volunteer!

The best way to sign-up as a volunteer is to review the position descriptions below, complete a Criminal System History Board CORI form, bring it to a spring or fall registration and introduce yourself to an FOVS volunteer.  All FOVS volunteers will receive training in and are expected to execute the tasks within the associated position descriptions listed below:

All FOVS Board of Directors, Coordinators, Directors and Managers are nominated and elected by the FOVS Board of Directors. All Coaches, Assistant Coaches and Referees are assigned by Travel Coordinator and Recreation Age Group Coordinators from volunteer sign-ups. FOVS Board of Director positions include:

President - (2) Year Term

  • Chief Executive of Organization.  Responsible for chairing General Meetings, Board Meetings and other miscellaneous meetings 

  • Represents FOVS at various soccer related functions as appropriate.

  • Responsible for setting tone and charting future directions (strategic role)

  • Oversee the functioning of recreation and travel soccer programs through FOVS coordinators

Vice President - (2) Year Term

  • Assist the President in performing his/her duties

  • Reserve and confirm meeting venues

  • Coordinates with FOVS Fields Manager to reserve fields used for Spring and Fall Recreation Soccer

  • Responsible for chairing General Meetings, Board Meetings and other miscellaneous meetings in the absence of the President

Secretary - (2) Year Term

  • Send out notifications and agenda for all meetings

  • Keep accurate minutes of all meetings and distributes same prior to next meeting

  • Document all items for consideration, voting and actions taken by the FOVS Board and Committees

  • Maintain current list of FOVS volunteers

Treasurer - (2) Year Term

  • Responsible for managing the organization's finances

  • Accounts payable

  • Filing annual tax return

  • Report financial information to FOVS Board

Assistant Treasurer - (2) Year Term

  • Assist Treasurer in performing his/her duties

  • Accounts receivable and all deposits

  • Report activity to Treasurer and to FOVS Board

Registration Coordinator - (2) Year Term

  • Responsible for FOVS recreation and travel player registration with MASSYOUTH and the South Coast Soccer League

  • Monitor forms, fees, due dates and other items required

  • Reserve and confirm venue for Spring and Fall Registration

  • Work with Advertising Coordinator for distribution of School Flyers, Print Ads and other public notification

Advertising Coordinator - (2) Year Term

  • Responsible for preparing all public notices including newspaper, cable TV., and school flyers

  • Coordinate with FOVS Board to confirm accurate copy prior to printing and distribution

  • Provide approved copy to FOVS Web Master for publishing on www.mvsoccer.org

Web Master - (2) Year Term

  • Responsible for maintaining the official FOVS website - www.mvsoccer.org

  • Coordinate with FOVS Advertising Coordinator for updates prior to each season

  • Publish official FOVS information and forward all inquiries to the appropriate person

Fund Raising Coordinator - (2) Year Term

  • Responsible for chairing committee to develop ideas for fundraising

  • Present fund raising options to FOVS Board

  • Coordinate fund raising events

  • Establish business sponsorship for travel team uniforms, warm-ups and equipment 

Coaches Education Director - (2) Year Term

  • Responsible for setting age appropriate guidelines for practices and games for both recreation and travel programs 

  • Train and monitor success all age-group coordinators, travel coordinators and coaches

  • Provide all coaches with guidance and written materials to assist them in coaching soccer

  • Notify the FOVS Board member of any problems or violations

 Travel Coordinator - (2) Year Term

  • Responsible for managing teams representing Martha's Vineyard in the South Coast Soccer League 

  • Coordinates uniforms and equipment needs with FOVS Equipment Coordinator

  • Coordinates with FOVS Field Manager to reserve local fields prior to spring season

  • Obtain league recognized referees for all home games

  • Notify FOVS Board member of any problems or violations

Assistant Travel Coordinator - (2) Year Term

  • Responsible for assisting the Travel Coordinator in his/her duties

  • Attend all South Coast Soccer League meetings and informs Travel Coordinator

  • Report game results to South Coast Soccer League

  • Arrange ferry and off-island transportation

Field Manager - (2) Year Term

  • Responsible for reserving soccer fields used by FOVS recreation and travel programs 

  • Maintain close relationship with representatives of schools and/or towns who maintain soccer fields

  • Coordinate a turf maintenance program with sub-contractor for all fields

  • Coordinate periodic field lining

  • Coordinate temporary port-a-potties and trash cans as requested by FOVS Board

Equipment Manager - (2) Year Term

  • Responsible for the inventory and storage or FOVS recreation and travel equipment

  • Coordinate with FOVS Board and Age Group Coordinators for ordering new uniforms and equipment as requested

  • Monitor condition of all FOVS owned goals, nets, fasteners, etc. and request updates from FOVS Board

  • Coordinate with representatives of schools and/or towns for scheduling proper storage of equipment

Age Group Coordinators - (2) Year Term - (Mini-Kicker: U6, 1st & 2nd Grade: U8, 3rd & 4th Grade: U10, 5th & 6th Grade: U12, 7th & 8th Grade: U14)

  • Responsible for recruiting coaches, assistant coaches and referees for their age division

  • Create fair and balanced teams for your age group from registered players

  • Host a pre-season coaches meeting to distribute uniforms, equipment, field allocations and schedules

  • Coordinate with FOVS Coach Education Director to distribute age appropriate practice and game information

  • Schedule all practices and games and notify coaches of cancellations and make-ups

  • Be available at all age group practices and games with first aid and cell phone

  • Notify Coaches Education Director or FOVS Board member of any problems or violations

 

Coaches - (1) Season - (All recreation age groups plus travel soccer teams)

  • Responsible for notifying parents/players of first practice

  • Distribute uniforms, equipment, team roster and game schedule to all team parents/players

  • Meet with parents/players to discuss age appropriate standards of play and FOVS philosophy

  • Request parental involvement in establishing a refreshment schedule for practices & games

  • Refer to age appropriate coaching information provided by Age Group Coordinator to plan practices and setup games

  • Teach the children how to play soccer in a stimulating, fun and safe environment

  • Arrive prepared prior to practice and game time and do not leave until all your players are picked-up by parent or guardian

  • Notify Age Group Coordinator, Coaches Education Coordinator or FOVS Board member of any problems or violations

Assistant Coach - (1) Season - (All recreation age groups plus travel soccer teams)

  • Responsible for assisting the coach is his/her duties

  • Review registration forms and discuss special player needs with parents

  • Bring registration forms to all practices and game (Important for emergency medical information) 

  • Maintain team equipment bag and bring to all practices and games (shin pads are required for all players)

  • Collect all unused team uniforms and equipment and return to FOVS Equipment Coordinator

  • Return all balls and equipment to the FOVS Equipment Coordinator after the last game

Referee - (1) Season - (All recreation age groups plus travel soccer teams)

  • Responsible for officiating games based on age appropriate standards of play

  • Ensure a fair and safe level of play

  • Educate players on game procedures and rules of the game

  • Facilitate frequent substitutions and position changes

  • Keep time during play and at breaks

  • Encourage good sportsmanship
