Fire, Police and Medical emergencies on Chappaquiddick:

If you have an emergency which requires assistance from the police, fire, ambulance or hospital:

CALL 911 OR FROM A CELL PHONE CALL 508-693-1212.

There is an emergency phone on the front of the Chappaquiddick Fire House.

The personnel at the communications center will call or page the necessary police, fire and ferry personnel to handle emergencies on Chappaquiddick, during the operating hours as well as after hours when the ferry is shut down.

Missing the last ferry run because you stayed at a party too late does not qualify as an emergency. Don't bother the hardworking and dedicated people at the communications center with this type of problem. Plan ahead, keep track of the time and don't wait until the last minute to rush to the ferry.

THE CHAPPY FERRY

The Ferry is now operating on the summer schedule:

The Ferry runs continuously from 6:45 am until midnight.

 Weather permitting.

The Chappaquiddick Ferry is open for business 365 days a year. See the above section for variations between the Summer and Winter schedules.

The ferry carries vehicles and passengers between Chappaquiddick Island and Dock Street in Edgartown.

Chappaquiddick is apparently Indian for “sometimes an island.”

Chappaquiddick is currently an actual island since the barrier beach at the south end of Katama Bay was breached by a storm in the Spring of 2007.

The straight line distance between the landings is 527 feet. Without any wind or current the crossing takes only 1 minute.

Since the breach there is nearly always a current. There are also back eddies and rips in the area of the ferry crossing.

During late winter and early spring of 2010 a suprising amount of erosion occurred at Wasque. The shoreline is now encroaching on the deflation parking lot. The swan pond has shrunk dramatically and the walk to the beach along the board walk with the benches is now only a few steps. Look at the Google Earth satellite photo which shows the breach in the summer of 2007 before you go out to Wasque and you will see the degree of change clearly.

Because of the breach, the direction of the tidal flow has reversed. Now a rising tide flows northward in through Katama Bay and a falling tide flows southward. The time of high and low tides at the ferry still agree with the Edgartown times posted in the tidal charts. However, the change in direction of the current flow agrees more closely with the times posted for ebb and flood at Wasque Point. We have observed the water level continuing to rise even after the current has changed direction.

Because of the strong currents the crossing may take several minutes
and cover thousands of feet traveled through the water.

Also because of the strong currents, docking the ferry has become
more difficult, therefore all passengers are required to sit down and
 hold on during the landing.
