FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  1. Q. Where can we buy Chappy Ferry apparel?
    A. Chappy Ferry Hats and T-shirts are available at the ticket sales area on the Edgartown side in July and August.

  2. Q. What and where is the ticket sales area?
    A. During July and August, the Chappy ferry gets very busy, so to help speed up the process of getting passengers on to the ferry, we have an area for a shore duty person to work. Before getting on the boat, the passengers purchase tickets from the shore duty person. Passengers then give their ticket to the boat crew as they board the ferry. The ticket sales area is located next to the ferry and the ferry house on the Edgartownside.

  3. Q. How late does the ferry run?
    A. The last ferry is at midnight on the summer schedule and at 11:15 PM on the winter schedule. More info about times can be found HERE

  4. Q. What time does the ferry start?
    A. The first run every day is at 6:45 AM year round.

  5. Q. What happens if I need to go over before 6:45 AM?
    A. The ferry offers a 6:00 AM and a 6:15 AM early morning trip for an extra $20. To schedule an early trip you need to talk to the Captain aboard one of the ferries before 6 PM in the afternoon of the day before your trip.

  6. Q. What happens if there is an emergency on Chappy when the ferry is closed?
    A. CALL 911 Call 911 if on a land line telephone or 508-693-1212 if on a cell phone. They will notify the appropriate emergency personnel as well as the ferry operator. Chappaquiddick has several EMTs in residence who will be notified immediately. The Edgartown Fire Department maintains a firehouse on Chappaquiddick with two fully equipped fire trucks which are operated by a staff of trained Chappaquiddick residents. There is an emergency phone on the front of the fire house. (Missing the last ferry run because you stayed too late at a party does not qualify as an emergency.)

  7. Q. Are there special prices for people who go over on the ferry frequently?
    A. Yes, the Chappy Ferry offers commuter books. Please see the price section of this web site for information or click HERE

  8. Q. What is the best time to go over on the ferry?
    A. The length of the ferry line depends on the time of day.
The lines are longest from Edgartown going to Chappaquiddick in the morning.
The lines are longest from Chappaquiddick going back to Edgartown in the afternoon.
9. Q. Why do some vehicles cut the line?
A. Some vehicles go right to the front of the waiting line.
Of course, emergency vehicles such as Police cars, Ambulances, Fire Trucks and Fire Personnel need to go across immediately.
Traditionally, the U.S. Mail delivery, the School Bus and the Visiting Nurses have cut the line.
Recently, large vehicles which cause congestion and exhaust issues on Simpson's Lane and Daggett Street have been allowed to cut the line on the Edgartown side only. This is done out of concern for homes along those streets. These vehicles are not allowed to cut the line when returning from Chappaquiddick since there is sufficient space in the waiting line adjacent to Chappaquiddick Road.
According to an agreement with home owners on Chappaquiddick, both UPS and Fed-Ex delivery vans are allowed to cut the line in both directions.

10. Q. Is the Chappy Ferry affiliated with the Falmouth Ferry?
The Chappy Ferry is not affiliated with the Falmouth Ferry. The Pied Piper makes daily scheduled runs between Memorial Wharf and Falmouth during the Spring, Summer and Fall. Schedules are available on the wharf. The Chappy Ferry can not be held responsible for asking the Pied Piper to wait for you. Plan ahead and leave plenty of time.
